BLM MURAL

During the summer of 2020 I had the pleasure of working with some of my old high school classmates; Sean Brewer, Olivia Mae Junkin, and Randi Jones, on a mural project for Bread for the City. Sean, Olivia, and I were tasked by the CEO, George A. Jones, to create a design that was bold and demonstrated Bread for the City’s solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. In the end, my design was chosen and we soon got to work painting. Watch our process in this video created by one of the artists, Sean Brewer. INTERVIEW

In 2019, my uncle Ronald Moten asked me to create a design that would represent the #DONTMUTEDC movement. Soon after the creation of the #DONTMUTEDC License Plate design, it was featured on the red carpet at the 2019 BET Awards, worn by Mighty Moe Hagans, the congo player for Sugar Bear and EU. This was a large stepping stone for me, and a clear indication on how intentional designs like mine can have an impact. GENTRIFICATION

This art piece was created during my senior year in college. It’s meant to mimic my interpretation of the split between the old DC and the new DC. The idea of a split street came to me one day while driving down New York Ave. NE. On one side I saw new apartment buildings going up and on the other I saw the version of DC I grew up seeing. While one could argue that new development is good, it ‘s also important to consider the underlying issues that come with stripping a city of it ‘s history, culture, and native people.
